The Hokianga Harbour offers many beautiful and interesting
attractions and activities.
You can just lie back and enjoy the peace, tranquility
and the stunning views. You can take a leisurely walk
along the waters edge, or go for a swim in the warm
clear water.
If you are feeling more energetic go kayaking or catch
the water taxi from Opononi to the sand hills and try
sand boarding.
Go for a night time forest encounter amongst the giant
Kauri Trees at Waipoua.
Drive out to the coast at Waimamaku Beach Road, or
South Head, and the mood changes from the tranquility
of the harbour - there the large breakers crash in from
the open sea.
Explore the rock pools, walk along the beaches, or
try your luck at fishing.
From South Head, Arai te Uru, watch the spectacular
water currents as the Tasman Sea meets the Hokianga
waters. If you are lucky you may see some orcas or dolphins
swimming in the harbour.
Up Waiotemarama Gorge Road is another popular walk,
to the waterfall and beyond where there are many examples
of N.Z. native trees.
At Koutu take a walk to see the giant round boulders
on the beach. For quieter moments the museum at Omapere
is full of historical information.
Around the Hokianga there are shops selling local arts
and crafts and quiet cafes to relax in.
Take a cheese making workshop at Waitawa Farm in Broadwood.
